Many unhappy lawyers quit law. Good for them! Without even trying, we all can easily list so many things we dislike about lawyering.

I didn’t quit. Instead, I learned to treat my law practice as a business. This transition began even before launching a new firm.

It seems so simple now, but it took me awhile to realize that you can’t get new clients and cases without legal marketing. So while working under other attorneys, I forced my mindset to shift from billable hours to gaining my own clients.

I read a ton of stuff on marketing. Being naive, I tried all sorts of programs like lead generation services, networking groups, lawyer referral programs, you name it. Along the way, I discovered that the most sustainable and effective way to develop business in the long term is to get clients organically. What I mean is that you produce great content to get client leads.

If you’re already crazy busy, you’re probably wondering where you’ll find the time. A tradeoff is required. To be forthright, it will require some sacrifice of time and effort if you want to develop a sustainable, long-term marketing strategy. Most attorneys will not make that sacrifice. The few that do will reap what they sow.

I can’t guarantee happiness, but I do know that my level of satisfaction dramatically increased when I gained a sense of ownership. And to increase your sense of ownership, you have to develop your book of business.

Nothing herein constitues legal or financial advice. I’m simply a practicing IP attorney on a journey to enjoy work more, and help others do the same. Join me on this journey.
